Report: Here Comes the Google Phone

The “Wall Street Journal” this week reported that Google is set to unveil plans for the so-called Google Phone, or gPhone, within the next two weeks. In sharp contrast to this year’s most hyped smart phone, Apple’s iPhone, the gPhone will be a totally open platform designed to make smart phone applications and services as accessible as PC- and Web-based offerings.

Contrary to early gPhone reports, the Journal says that Google won’t be directly making or selling the device, but will rather announce a slew of “advanced software and services” that run on an open platform that will be made by handset makers and sold to the public by wireless carriers. These applications and services will include such Google stalwarts as Internet search, Gmail email, Google Maps, and YouTube.

Although stripped-down mobile versions of some of these applications and services are currently available on today’s smart phones, the new Google platform would offer new levels of integration and functionality. But the biggest innovation, reportedly, is the new open platform Google is pushing, which would reportedly allow third parties to more easily build additional features for the phones.

Anyone with even a passing understanding of the smart phone market knows, however, that these capabilities already exist on Microsoft’s Windows Mobile platform, as well as on competing platforms from Nokia, Palm, RIM, and others. Only Apple has chosen to lock down its smart phone against third-party developers, although the company recently announced that it will at least partially open the iPhone sometime in 2008. It’s unclear whether Google’s upcoming gPhone announcement played a role in that decision, although Google CEO Eric Schmidt is on Apple’s Board of Directors.

Palm Treo 700wx for Sprint – PDA Phone Reviews by Mobile Tech Review

I must admit, I miss my Treo 700w for many reasons.  Most of which involve the differences between a full version Windows Mobile phone, and a Windows Mobile Smart phone, currently my Motorola Q.  I was use to all of those functions, and have found ways to adapt without them, but the new 700wx looks like very appealing.

I do not miss the lock ups, the calls not coming or going through, the programs staying open, the not being able to install programs or my phone would crash, I do not miss any of those things, but it appears that they have fixed it for Sprint.  Why is Verizon still carrying the same piece of crap 700w then?

Personal Tech Pipeline | Second Thoughts: Palm Treo 700w

Not that long ago I posted my rave review on my Treo 700w. A month later, and 2 Treo’s later, I am not as excited as I once was.

In the above article they talk about lock ups, which is a problem with these models. I had this problem with my first Treo, along with a lot of other issues, so I returned it for another model, to give it another try. Although the second model does run better, it still has all the issues as in the above article. Lock ups, etc.

Currently on my second Treo, I have had to already completely hard reset it. I haven’t installed anything on it, except my own ring tones. No games, no skype, no Microsoft money, no additional programs at all, and it seems to be running a lot better. For me, these things I didn’t have before, except for Microsoft Money, but I can do without it. Should I have to go without it? No, of course not, but my main reason for getting this device is to keep me straight with my schedule, things to do, clear my head and be done with it, and this device does that very well. The wireless sync, although occasionally has to be reset, basically runs very well, and with this being new technology, it can only get better, and it works for me.

One thing I compare this to, which was one of my concerns being a IT person, is going with a mini computer as my main phone? On my PC, I don’t use IE, wouldn’t dream of it, but this Treo is on the internet, I am using IE on it, what about spyware? What about viruses? Is it only a matter of time? Is that already a issue and a result of the lock ups? What is taking up so much memory in a device that has nothing additional installed and only leaving me average 4-6 megs of memory for daily use?

For someone who travels, who relies on it heavily for communication, important business calls, e-mails getting through, I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s going to have issues, and you will experience lock ups during calls, which will result in lost calls. For me, if a call doesn’t get through, I have voice mail, it’s my personal phone, not my business phone. They will call back. For now I have decided to keep my Treo, and I do love it, for what it does, and I have managed to lessen the flaws. If you are thinking of purchasing one, and are comfortable with a seperate pda and phone, I would stick with that.

My purchase is complete and my new shadow is configured and more than ready to go. I recently have decided on a new cell phone, finally, and have purchased the Treo 700w. They call it a smart phone, and now I know why, sometimes I think it’s smarter than I!!

Wrapped in this small package (for a PDA) is Windows Mobile 5.0 and all of your cell phone features. What does this do for you? Let’s start with what it’s done for me, and you can then determine if you can relate!

Do you constantly write yourself little notes, or stick post its to yourself that end up getting lost, but then when you lose it, you know exactly which one it is, what color and what it looks like, and you spend way to much time looking for it, and even if you do find it, you have to do something with it, either store it somewhere or enter it somewhere?

* With a treo, skip the post it, writing note set. Enter it in as a task and set a reminder for day and time or enter your appointment directly, hit save. Time Saved?

Do you spend your time looking at your calendar, or trying to figure out where all the time goes in your day?

*Let the Treo take control of it and look at your phone? It’s all right there at a glance, your day. Time Saved?

Ever been out and wanted to know where you can find the nearest Seafood restaurant?

* Go to programs and Explorer and the internet is at your finger tips. Try services like Google Local, or Yahoo Local and save them as favorites. You will never be driving aimlessly again.

Ever capture a perfect view and have the sudden urge to go for a walk, or arrived at the gym only to forget your mp3 player?

* Grab your Treo and headphones and listen to your tunes through Windows Media.

Ever lose your pda or run out of space in your purse or pockets because your ipod, cell phone and pda are taking up all the room, or find yourself carrying way to many gadgets?

* It’s called a Treo!

Have you ever been out and been out of sync because you forgot to sync?

* Been there, done that, get the Treo and set it up with Wireless syncing and forget all about having to remember to do that as well.

Ever wanted to update in one place and have it on every calendar you look at, for example, work, home, kids, workout, travel?

* Again, wireless sync, do it once, live life the rest.

Have you ever been out and wanted so bad to purchase that geek gadget, or that cute little dress, only to wonder how you can swing it on your budget?

* Install Microsoft Money on your Treo and look directly at your budget and do your moving around of bills instantly.

Ever been waiting in a doctors office, or on the train and wonder what your peeps are up too?

* Log into msn messenger or any of your ims and see instantly what you are missing. Check your e-mail and send and receive as well.

Are you lost?

* You have the internet, and GPS on your phone, use the services provided, mapquest, google maps, google local. All right there, phone home, your on your way?

Are you one of those people who I get behind who is yacking on their cell phone with it up to your ear, or swerving all over the road because they are dialing numbers, or better yet, going below the speed limit in the fast lane because you are arguing in your cell phone?

* Activate voice dialing and get a bluetooth headset and be take responsibility for yourself and all of us around you. Also, you can add speed dials right on the front of your phone which can be clicked on for instant calling.

Are you just a total airhead sometimes, or keep way to much information in your head and go brain dead trying to absorb it all.

* Store it, release it, and clear your head, it’s ok, let it work for you, the clarity is worth every penny.

Did I mention the advantages to traveling and carrying a Treo vs a laptop? Vacation with the family but you are wondering who your internet flame is messing around with?

* You have a Treo, sneak into the bathroom and check in and get your piece of mind back and then turn your phone off and go enjoy your family and don’t even think of taking Treo to the beach, you have to have a break once in awhile and your family deserves better.

Tired of paying for ringtones, only to not have the right sound, or the part of the song you want?

* You can create your own ringtones and assign how you see fit to any mp3 player.

If you answered yes to any of these questions, this device can work for you. I am totally in love with Treo and feel a huge amount of freedom combining my devices and this is the future. I do get a few lock ups, but only when it is very low on battery power. I read that a tip is not to let it run down, to keep it charging when sitting still and it you will lengthen the battery life. I am finding that I charge at night and it seems to be sufficient for what I am doing, that includes heavy talk time, texting and moderate browsing.

If you are looking for a way to simplify and organize your life, this phone will do this for you, and a whole lot more. I recommend this highly over Palm 650. I have not seen any of the consistent bugs in the Treo 700 as I have seen in the 650s. As with any purchase get the insurance on this kind of technology and protect your purchase. In a few months this could be outdated :P

In the meantime, I’m on the Treo! Any questions or comments feel free to contact me.

Taco Bell under what, and the zip under where and then find, and you will find all the nearest Taco Bells.  Gas stations, banks, Grocery Stores, you name it.  Phone numbers I believe as well are highlighted so that some phones can click and call automatically.
Google SMS allows you to use google through text messaging and it’s pretty cool.  You can text Google and do say

w 21011

Google will text you back with the current weather and the 7 day forecast for whatever zip code you provide.

Same thing with Taco Bell, or Pizza, or seafood.  Type it in with zip code.

Want to know what a word means?  No more looking stupid at a party, type in Define and then the word and google will keep you smart.

Want stock quotes, it has them.  Text Google.

Want Movie listings, got them.

A lot more.

Check out the Link above and check out what Google has for the mobile user.  Google is so hot!!

Treo 700W

Only a few months away so my research has begun today.  I will be upgrading my phone in March, which I desperately need to do.  I can’t stand carrying around my pda, my phone, my ipod any longer.  I am not ready to give up my ipod to the current gadgets that are out there, or at least there is nothing with Verizon that combines all 3 so I am going to settle for at least combing the two, pda and cell phone.

The treo’s are nice shaped and not as big as the blackberries, or at least the one model.  I do not like the Palm software.  I support a few of these at work, and had a Palm in the past, and for my job and being use to my current pocket pc, I am sticking with the Pocket PC software.  I am interested in this Palm and also a few others I am looking at.  I really want something smaller.

I will post my choices as it gets closer, funds will also play a huge role as well :)
